Perhaps it is an alien planet? The big things (large rectangle shapes that connect the bridges.) could be buildings, with the bridges connecting different levels, but since there is not a bridge on every level, and the bridges are in these little slot things, perhaps they slide up and down, so the people would be pressing a little button to call down (or up) the bridge like we do elevators. Perhaps the doors into it would have to be like elevators' sliding doors too, that way the bridge could move down, and then the door would slide open.
Alternatively, the whole wall there could slide up and down with the bridge, but that would have other problems. It looks like, though, that some of the places are fixed into the wall, perhaps they are like the most public or common places to go? Or certain levels lead to bridges that can lead to three different levels? (the other end of the bridge sliding up and down one level.)
